Melanie de Leeuw maakte ruim twee jaar gelden de radicale switch van tekstschrijver naar front-end developer. Ze beheerst haar HTML, CSS en JavaScript nu als een pro en leert gretig bij met hulp van haar collega’s. Haar eerste klus als junior front-end developer deed ze voor ABN Amro. ‘Het was uitdagend maar vooral gaaf om in een nieuwe tech stack te duiken.’

Van niks naar app in vijf maanden

‘Een overzicht van alle development rondom internetbankieren – dat vind je in de interne app voor ABN Amro die ons team herbouwde. De app is specifiek voor product owners en project managers bij de bank. In vijf maanden herbouwden we de app met een team van vijf developers en een business analist van Capgemini. Ik was voor het eerst van start tot eind betrokken bij de bouw van een applicatie. Het was extra spannend, want de tech stack van de bank was nieuw voor me: het Vue-framework met LitElement en Node.js als landingsbasis.’

Vue met juiste look en feel

‘Juist die combinatie van Vue met LitElement maakte dit project ook echt cool. Vue is al heel fijn om mee te werken: lichtgewicht, met goede basiscomponenten en heel reactive. En met LitElement til je de mogelijkheden nog naar een hoger level. Samen met andere development teams van de bank bouwden we kleine LitElements met de look, feel en functionaliteiten die nodig waren. Zo kreeg de app precies de juiste stijl van de bank. Het hergebruik van componenten maakte dat we goed moesten samenwerken, dat vond ik misschien nog wel het mooist.’

Van basics naar trainer

‘Aan het begin van dit project moest ik wel even slikken. Het was overweldigend, omdat ik alleen de basics van Vue kende. Dat maakte dit project tegelijkertijd superleerzaam. Ook dankzij de warme community rondom Vue, en dankzij mijn collega’s bij Cap – stuk voor stuk heel goede en geduldige developers. Zij hebben me in vijf maanden zóveel geleerd over Vue dat ik er nu trainingen in geef. De volgende stap? JavaScript nog beter beheersen, zodat ik me de volgende tech stack van een klant nog sneller eigen maak.’

‘This project taught me so much that I now teach others about Vue’

Melanie de Leeuw made a radical switch from copywriter to front-end developer two years ago. An app from scratch in just five months

“An overview of all of the developments around online banking; that’s what you can find in the internal app that our team re-built for ABN AMRO. The app is intended specifically for the bank’s product owners and project managers. In just five months, we rebuilt the app with a team of five developers and a business analyst from Capgemini. It was the first time I was involved in the construction of an application from start to finish. It was even more exciting, because the bank’s tech stack was entirely new to me: the Vue framework with LitElement and Node.js as a landing foundation.”

Vue with the right look and feel

“It’s the combination of Vue and LitElement that makes this project so cool. Vue’s already great to work with: lightweight, with good basic components and very reactive. And with LitElement, you can lift the possibilities to an even higher level. Together with the bank’s other development teams, we built little LitElements with the look, feel and functionalities they needed. That gave the app the exact style the bank wanted. Re-using components meant that we had to work well together, which I think might have been the best part of the job!”

From basics to trainer

“I was a bit anxious at the start of the project. It seemed overwhelming, because I only knew the basics of Vue. But that also made the project a great learning experience. Thanks in part to the warm community around Vue and my colleagues at Cap – all of whom are great, patient developers. They taught me so much about Vue in those five months that I can now train others. My next step? To master JavaScript, so that I can start using the next client’s tech stack even faster.”
