Embracing abilities – inclusion of persons with disabilities

More than 1 billion people in this world are living with some form of disability. That’s 1 in 7 of us.

80% of the affected people get their disability between the ages of 18 and 64 – the average working age for most – and they are 50% more likely to be unemployed. In India alone, there are over 26.8 million persons with disabilities. Many of these people are of employable age, but only 9.8 million are employed.

Due to lack of accessible infrastructure and awareness, they find it difficult to earn a decent living. To ensure their workforce participation, corporate India needs to commit to systematic skill building and advocacy.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) launched a unique and first of its kind, India Business Disability Network (IBDN) at the National Conference on ‘Mainstreaming Inclusivity & Accessibility – Enabling Industry’ in Delhi on July 19th, 2019, to promote and facilitate an inclusive, accessible and a barrier-free workplace within the corporate sector. Capgemini India is a signatory!

At Capgemini, we identify Embracing Abilities as a business opportunity, not only limited to our social responsibility.

Celebrating talent beyond disabilities

At Capgemini, we believe ability reveals itself and seeing is believing – showcasing role models is an integral part of our people strategy.

Our vision is to enable an equal opportunity workplace based on “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPWD), 2016 “

Our goal is to hire pro-actively based on ability, irrespective of the type of disability, both from campus and from our Digital Academies. We also proactively seek and review applications from persons with disability for lateral open positions as well. Our governance mechanism comprises of having a Business Sponsor and Business/HR representatives from all business lines who are not only passionate but also work on the ground to make things happen and bring the required change, making Capgemini one of the best companies for persons with disabilities.

From a social responsibility commitment:

Though our Digital Talent Academies we upskill PWD talent who are NEET (not in education, employment or training). The vision is to facilitate sustainable inclusion of this talent pool to not only further holistic social development but also address skills gap to drive employability.

The program caters to youth who are constrained by financial crisis, inadequate skills, irregular employment, lack of training opportunities, and little to no bargaining power at an economic or social level.

We further express our commitment through absorption of up to 10% of the successful talent pool.

Capgemini has an Equal Opportunity and Diversity Inclusion policy which states that ‘The company is committed to equality of opportunity and dignity at work for all, irrespective of caste, religion, race, colour, creed, ethnic or national origins, gender, marital status, sexuality, disability, class, financial status or age’.
