Client story

Application portfolio rationalization for telco and insurance players

Client: Telco and insurance clients
Region: Europe
Sector: Telecoms, Insurance

Our telco and insurance clients selected Capgemini Hungary to support their application landscape simplification and rationalization initiatives in the phases of post-merger integration.

By leveraging our in-house-developed APR (application portfolio rationalization) methodology and toolset, we were able to conduct out a comprehensive assessment and analysis for the client, as well as detailed action plans.

Challenge

The client had hundreds of applications running, following different mergers and acquisitions.
As a result, many parallel applications were appearing with the same or similar functionalities – but because there were many different business owners and missing documentation, it was not possible to consolidate them.

These applications were built on outdated technologies and platforms, and their operating and maintenance costs were high.

The client therefore required us to assess the applications, and provide our recommendations for their possible retirement or consolidation.

Solution

Capgemini Hungary defined an APR methodology (Application Portfolio Rationalization) – an assessment method based on eight dimensions with scoring rules – and developed a propriety assessment tool. This was based on our experience of similar projects and methods already used across the Capgemini Group to objectively assess any application, and propose its optimal future status.

After defining the methodology and setting up the tool, we assessed over 100 applications in a phased-wise manner. We gathered and analyzed documentations, architecture diagrams, and cost statistics, and conducted questionnaires and interviews with the client’s business and IT experts.

Benefits

Based on the results of the assessment and the action items recommended by the assessment tool, we were able to define a project for application rationalization with quality cost estimations and ROI calculations. We also assessed the IT application/infrastructure landscape and mapped the architecture models in ArchiMate, using Sparx Enterprise Architect to provide an IT architecture baseline for the defined rationalization projects.

Based on the assessment result and the ROI calculations delivered in Logical Project definition documents, tens of millions of euros of savings were evaluated for the client.
