The emergence of enterprise automation

A roundtable discussion by Everest Group

We uncover the challenges posed by siloed approaches, the drivers propeling change, and the shifting focus towards delivering value and meeting evolving customer expectations. We also unravel the complexities of enterprise automation and anticipate the transformative impact of emerging technologies like generative AI.

The current automation market is moving from rule-based to AI-driven solutions, with business process and IT automation leading the charge. While traditionally separate, these sectors are now converging into enterprise automation, expected to grow rapidly. Industries like banking and healthcare, along with North America, lead in adoption. Generative AI is poised to accelerate automation further.

The siloed approach to automation creates challenges in organizational collaboration and cost efficiency. Fragmented adoption across divisions limits visibility and increases duplication of efforts, leading to higher total cost of ownership. This prompts organizations to consider more integrated automation strategies.

Another challenge often encountered in client engagements is ensuring the delivery of tangible value through enterprise automation programs. This involves two aspects: first, identifying genuine value and its sources, and second, measuring the realized value. While value exists, it’s not always clearly focused on or effectively measured. Additionally, the targets set for automation may lack a holistic perspective, limiting the full potential of automation. Taking a longer-term and broader view could enhance the overall value derived from automation initiatives.

The major drivers of change in enterprise automation include the breakdown of organizational silos through the establishment of common centers of excellence and steering teams. Additionally, there’s a shift towards provider consolidation and platform-based approaches to streamline IT landscapes and enable tailored automation solutions.

Customer expectations are driving significant changes in automation, shifting the focus from cost savings to value outcomes and competitive advantage. Organizations aim to meet evolving customer demands for seamless, end-to-end processes. Internally, clear visibility of return on investment is crucial, as automation initiatives mature. Moreover, the adoption of generative AI is reshaping automation strategies, promising transformative effects in the coming quarters.
